LOST ISSUES-left behind 7"
The latest band from the Wisconsin, Weaving the Deathbag crew. Raging hardcore, with fast timing changes and a dirgey quality. Reminiscent of 80's hardcore that I can't pin point right now, probably because in fairness their influences are diverse and their ultimate sound and style is unique. Ranging from harmonious to pummeling, with a weaving guitar throughout, and moderate mid-ranged vocals singing about, well hey, issues... thinking and pondering and continuing to forge ahead, and fight for what you believe in and what matters. Perhaps a touch of East Bay early 90's style here, like Econochrist or early Grimple. (Chris-Slug & Lettuce #89)
WEAVING THE DEATHBAG-inoculation 7"
There are a lot of bands out there, and a lot of records. But this Wisconsin band is one that each time they have a new record I grab for it. I love this band with a ferocious obsession. Their sound is hard to pinpoint, which is precisely what I like about them. Playing all the familiar elements of fast, thrashing and raging hardcore punk. This has a totally erupting and fully amped style, delivered in blazing speed with vocals that can match the pace. While having heavy hard driving elements, they also manage some amazingly diverse guitar lines which keep a melody overtop the speed. What I like about this band is that they play fast as can be, while still having elements of melody and metallic hardcore, and thrash, without easily being described as any or either. Thoughtful and honest, this is a great band! Fantastic artwork on the sleeve too. (Chris) SLUG AND LETTUCE #82
HIGH ON CRIME-pour some sewage on me 7"
Milwaukee’s HOC are heavy beyond believability–as in so heavy this could kill you. If’n you don’t already know about this band, it’s 2/3 of Artimus Pyle and guitar slayer from 7 Days of Samsara, and a wicked double bass drummer, combining efforts to play a powerful wall of heavy, drop tuned, bass throbbing power that blisters with oozing pus, and raw sewage. Vocally gnarly and intense, and just as over the top. Songs about a dying earth, sewage in the lakes and soldiers killed for nothing. This is brutality beyond words, delivered in apocalyptic hardcore form. Heavy, driving and powerful. Fucking fuck yeah, and them some. (Chris) SLUG AND LETTUCE #83
HIGH ON CRIME-until no flags fly LP
Ohmigod, whats going on on this LP? HIGH ON CRIME http://www.highoncrime.com , who contain members of ARTIMUS PYLE, KUNGFU RICK and SEVEN DAYS OF SAMSARA, unleashed an album thats simply first-class cuz monumental hardcore cannot be played any better! This is mid tempo to more rapidly, thundering, gloomy neocrust with tons of dark, morbid melodies and a hoarse roaring singer who spits out gallons of venomous poison!! This wall of sound reminds me of the missing link between TRAGEDY and ARTIMUS PYLE and thats, of course, a good sign in my book. Do yourself a favor and purchase this work of genius youll not be disappointed!! ** Warprayer # 148 **HIGH ON CRIME-until no flags fly LP
Holy fucking shit!! Is what I have to say about this. I got my introduction to this Wisconsin band when I saw them play in January and they blew me into the wall with the heavy assault of power and air jumping mania. This is the kind of heavy that pounds your chest and leaves you breathless, and that gets me carrying on, acting stupid and talking about obsessive fanatical fandom. This band is a hybrid of Artimus Pyle and Seven Days of Samsara. So think of the insane heaviness of the Robert-John Artimus pair (I mean they have that shit down perfect) and then cranck it up a notch or two of speed, and dirgey sludge, and then weave the guitars cause now there are two and layer the vocals, cause now there are two, and then throw in some throttled double bass drumming, and you’ll be peeing in your pants. This got a "holy fucking fuck" from me when I saw them, left me breathless, clutching my chest and giggling, and dying for the recording which now I have. This shit is hot and I love it!!! PETROGRAD-trigger happy CD
What a super nice surprise!
Coming from Luxemburg, Petrograd is a collective that according to its members has in common the love for rock´n´roll. Sorry guys, but I will have to add three-chord punk rock music and electronic sounds to that ambiguous description, otherwise I won’t be able to express the feeling ‘Trigger Happy’ has left me.
To describe the music of Petrograd is quite difficult, first because it’s original, and secondly because it’s ambivalent. It emanates a punk feeling but sounds very alternative and versatile. Sometimes sounding like a more punked out and emotional version of Against Me!, but also with influences taken from bands like Björk and Sonic Youth. As cliché as it may sound every single song contained in this album has its own identity. Each song seems to be a new musical story… a new musical experience.
Petrograd started as a band in October 96 and has released 14 releases. ‘Trigger Happy’ compiles songs from a number of these releases, most of which are split albums, 10” and 7”, but it also contains unreleased material. The only left for me to say is… Get this! (Cara a Cara)
ASSCHAPEL-fire and destruction LP
"This Lp is a brick in the face. Definitely blunt force trauma to the skull. Maybe a crushed rib cage will suffice. Asschapel lays down 12 tracks of sheer metalized head banging destruction. The music is an onslaught of dual vocal screams, think Slayer like triplet palm muting and thick riffage, double bass drumming and break neck punk beats, this all can only equal one thing... death. You can even get a taste of that Nashville sound a little in the songs structure. If you ask me Asschapel is way more manic and musically charged then most bands that are out right now. Asschapel is a musical force to be reckoned with. The intensity of the music carries on from song to song like a berserker in the midst of battle who effortlessly swings his axe and is covered in the blood of his foes. It is he alone who stands victorious upon the wasteland. Follow the fist and see these maniacs live; you would have never thought that these friendly guys from Nashville could unleash such unholy destruction. This album receives 9.5 points out of 10. This is the shit. There is a Cd version from Crimes Against Humanity Records." (Heartattack Magazine)

Chris and I went to the pointless fest a few months ago. Now this metal head is pretty fuckin opinionated when it comes to music, so needless to say there were only a few band I really wanted to see. Regardless, I kept an open mind and enjoyed almost all the bands. So what does this do with Asschapel you may be asking. Simple, as Robert and I hung out in the corner we would talk about new music. Knowing my proclivity for death metal, he told my I NEEDED to check out Asschapel. "Stupid fucking name" I said "They're death metal and don't know it." was his answer. so trusting his judgment, I was pleased to see a copy of this record arrive in a week of being home from the feast. I promptly snatched it up and played it. Holy Shit!!! If Robert ain't right on the mark! Well not exactly. They are not death metal, but fuck if they don't have a large leaning towards it. Let me make an analogy. There is a band from Belgium called Aborted. They're a death metal band, but they stand out amongst the sea of mundane bands because they break out of that mold and incorporate different styles of heavy music within the death metal framework. On a side note, anyone who shares my musical taste should definatly pick up a copy of Aborted's "Goremageddon: the saw and the carnage done." Anyhow, Asschapel does the same for Hardcore. They are essently a hardcore band in the vein of the Tennessee Diaspora (Tragedy/From Ashes Rise), but they are so so so much more. They incorporate death metal, rock, and kick ass hardcore into a stew of brilliant music that I can't stop playing! I've done the test. I get paid to play metal CDs for the staunchest, close minded to the point of "if it isn't metal it's weak" metalheads, and everyone who has heard it wants to know who Asschapel is. Nuff said, buy this today. (Eric)
WEAVING THE DEATHBAG - lost in the world 7" review
*Maximum Rock&Roll #245 "Second EP from these Wisconsin punks--complex, quick paced hardcore punk that never really hits light speed, with heartfelt lyrics that stand in contrast to the overly negative crap that seems to be the cliché of the day. Honest and frustrated, but a glimmer that tomorrow might just be better, Great" (Mike Thorn)

*Maximum Rock&Roll #234: Killer fucking Midwestern hardcore punk from these ex.USV, DEFACTO OPPRESSION, and ASININE SOLUTION folx. Melodic yet speedy hardcore, which at times brings to mind Tulsa’s favorite sons, NOTA. Well constructed and thought out lyrics round out this rather excellent, and soon to be Midwestern classic. No rehash here, just solid hardcore fucking punk. (MT)
***Slug&Lettuce #73 Raging and galloping intense hardcore, midwest style. Combining the full throttled speed with melodic guitar lines and a full energetic adrenaline. Short and fast songs with good lyrics-including one about not bringing dogs to shows. Quick tempo changes deliver incredible hooks and a relentless energy that makes this both really catchy and memorable. This is good-really fucking good!****(Chris)
***Heartattach #36 Another new band that goes for the old time hard-core sound. All in all I think they've managed to make it sound quite contemporary and powerful. I'm listening to this and I'm thinking of bands like Citizens Arrest and Haywire (although, I guess, they don't really sound like those bands.) What's really cool, too, is that this record comes with one of those old school huge lyric sheets with a poster on one side and the lyrics and the band pictures on the other. Awesome. Really, this is just great all around. The sound is excellent and the lyrics show an amazing amount of insight and maturity. Great thrashing hard-core!

***Maxium Rock & Rock #222: "Wow. Certainly left a favorable impression - the first song was a quick foray into spiteful hardcore and was immediately proceeded by another similar blast. I love it when bands don't bother with the pause between songs-why allow someone to catch their breath? This is some great stuff. Whoa! A curve ball-song three has a slightly mellower feel, mostly due to the superclam, almost acoustic breaks. Ahhh... a bit in and we're back to the frenzied, hoarse hardcore that I much preferred. Some solid stuff here - another label to check out - see ASSCHAPEL for more info." (TM, MRR)
***Slug & Lettuce #69: Powerful hardcore packed with the weaving guitars and melodic breaks of the discordant hardcurgencyle. Full of an angst ridden urgency and a blistering, layered powerful style. The guitars rage and weave. The momentum is powerful and forcefully urgent. The vocals are mid-range hardcore scream style with dual vocal parts. Really good stuff. Full of energy with a great mix of power and melody; distortion and discordance; anger and angst; all of which has an epic feeling. I really like it! (Chris) ****
***Heartattack #32: This is forceful and political hardcore much like other bands like From Ashes Rise and the like. This is really good in that same way. Songs about the horrors of industrialization and suffering and other important and equally depressing topics. There aren't really any songs or parts of songs that I have to skip over and that's fucking great. If you like epic crusty hardcore, you should check this out. (FIL)
